The most important question, of course, is: How do the games play? Like a dream. Every bit as well as they do on the PC version, as a matter of fact. Granted, most Macs are not going to have video hardware quite as advanced as what you’ll find on many PCs. But our test 17-inch MacBook Pro plowed through the 3D-oriented Portal on maximum details with no problems, and the lighter-weight Torchlight played smoothly at full settings even during scenes filled with animation. Judging from these titles it’s your hardware—not the software—that will determine your performance on Steam for Mac, just as is true on the PC.
Steam definitely has the potential of revolutionizing the way games are distributed and played on the Mac, just as it’s done for the PC. How to Enable Accessibility on macOS 10.14 Mojave. Open System Preferences. How to Enable Accessibility on macOS 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra and 10.13 High Sierra. Open System Preferences > Universal Access.

There was one small hitch: If you want to use the Shift-Tab overlay for hooking into the Steam community while playing, you need to turn on the “Enable access for assistive devices” option in the Universal Access panel. (Whenever you start a game, you’ll be reminded to do this.) In every other way, Steam for Mac is everything we hoped it would be, and for the first time in a long while we found ourselves excited about the prospect of playing games on a Mac.

Steam definitely has the potential of revolutionizing the way games are distributed and played on the Mac, just as it’s done for the PC. But for that to thoroughly happen, it needs more and better games and—dare we hope?—either Mac-only or Mac-optimized titles that won’t feel like just warmed-over PC offerings. A somewhat more Mac-friendly interface, one that doesn’t require quite so much Windows-style maneuvering, would also help improve the overall experience.
But the platform is still very new, and there’s plenty of time to build up the libraries and work out the kinks. When Valve does—and we have little doubt it will—Steam will be just as formidable a force on Macs as it currently is on PCs. We’re not sure that its presence will be enough to turn the tides of popularity in Apple’s favor, but it will strip away the bragging rights of many a PC owner who’ll now have to come up with a better answer to why his computer is better. From here on out, the Mac is a gaming underdog no more.

How to use Wineskin to install the Windows version of Steam on Mac OS X. This demonstration was done on Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
UPDATE:
For those using Mavericks, make sure you are using Wine version 1.7.8 or better. If you still have issues, you can try the following winetricks settings:
sound=coreaudio
macdriver=mac
win7
UPDATE 1-31-14:
Also, keep in mind that this does use Wine, which is an ongoing project. Most games may not work 'out of the box'. It may take some more configuration in the actual Wine environment itself to get a specific game to run.
UPDATE 3-10-14:
For those you on Mavericks that are experiencing the 'ERROR: NoConfigServers Online. Apparently there have been some updates and a possible bug. This is the workaround that I have found.
1. Go ahead and create the Wrapper according to the tutorial using winetricks (make sure you update Winetricks). The reason for this is that the dwrite bug is automatically fixed. So you won't have to deal with that.
2. Go to the Steam website and download the Windows version.
3. Right click and Show Contents of your Steam Wrapper, and double-click the Wineskin.app inside.
4. Click Install Software
5. Point it to the 'SteamSetup.exe' that you just downloaded.
6. Run through the install (it will reinstall Steam in the same directory) and it will continue through the Update process and open the Steam Client window.
UPDATE 3-20-2014:
It appears that whatever was wrong with the 'NoConfigServers' bug has been fixed. I did a run through on Mavericks 10.9.2 using Wineskin Engine 1.7.14NoFlicker (the latest version) and Wrapper Version 2.5.12 and was able to follow through the tutorial steps without any errors or additional steps.
UPDATE 11-6-14
A lot of users have been experiencing a 'sha1sum mismatch' error during installation. This appears to be a bug within the winetricks script. I have created a new video tutorial for an alternate method of installing Steam. You can view it here.
